African Official.

Found this image as a damaged and scratched black and white photograph. Have spent hours repairing the photo and got carried away as I decided that it would look marvelous as colorized image. Spent way too much time on this image but loved my waste of time.

I just loved the pride this man showed in his beautiful costume, red green turban, sword, medallion, grey beard and mustache. Also the contrast between red dress and green foliage in the background.

Original image:

East African Official for Germany, Formerly a Sultan, Tanganyika, Africa
This photograph of an official in Tanganyika (present-day Tanzania) is from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection at the Library of Congress. Frank G. Carpenter (1855–1924) was an American writer of books on travel and world geography, whose works helped to popularize cultural anthropology and geography in the United States in the early years of the 20th century. Consisting of photographs taken and gathered by Carpenter and his daughter Frances (1890–1972) to illustrate his writings, the collection includes an estimated 16,800 photographs and 7,000 glass and film negatives. Carpenter’s New Geographical Reader: Africa (1924) informed readers that the “country was formerly known as German East Africa. It belonged to Germany until World War, when the English and Belgian troops conquered the Germans and their large native army, and since then Great Britain has taken over the administration of the colony under the League of Nations. The government officials are now all British, and the country is policed by the King’s African Rifles.” This photograph was taken by Carl von Vincenti, who was active in Africa from the 1890s to about 1910.
